Cash

Most popular ways to give this asset:

One of the easiest and most common ways for you to support Bishop Chatard High School is with a gift of cash. Cash can be used to support our work in the form of:

  • An outright gift. By making a cash gift by check, credit card or money order today, you enable us to meet our most urgent needs and carry out our mission on a daily basis. You will have the opportunity to see your generosity in action and will also receive an immediate federal income tax charitable deduction, when you itemize.
  • A payable on death (POD) account. A POD bank account or certificate of deposit names one or more persons or charities as the beneficiary of all funds once you, the account owner, pass away. The beneficiary you name has no rights to the funds until after your lifetime. Until that time, you remain in control and are free to use the money in the bank account, change the beneficiary or close the account.

An Example of How it Works:
Meet Dan and Kelly. When they got married and created a will, they included a $75,000 gift to Bishop Chatard.  As the family grew to include three children, Dan and Kelly decided to revise their gift to ensure their children’s future financial security.

They met with their attorney and revised the gift language so that Bishop Chatard received a percentage of their estate, instead of a specific amount. Dan and Kelly now rest easy knowing their plans will provide for the people and charitable work they love.

There’s a way for you to support Bishop Chatard High School and feel confident that you have dependable income in your retirement years. You can do this with a charitable gift annuity.

This type of donation can provide you with regular payments and allow us to further our work. You can also receive a variety of tax benefits, including a federal income tax charitable deduction.

An Example of How it Works

Bruce, 66, and Denise, 65, want to make a contribution to Bishop Chatard, but they also want to ensure that they have dependable income during their retirement years. They establish a $20,000 charitable gift annuity.

Based on their ages, they will receive a payment rate of 4.3 percent, which means that they will receive $860 each year for the remainder of their lives. They’re also eligible for a federal income tax charitable deduction of $5,544* when they itemize. Finally, they know that after their lifetimes, the remaining amount will be used to support our mission.

*Based on annual payments and a 2.4 percent charitable midterm federal rate. Deductions vary based on income earned.

If you have built a sizeable estate and also are looking for ways to receive reliable payments, consider a charitable remainder trust.

These types of gifts do offer you tax benefits and the option for income. There are two ways to receive payments and each has its own benefits:

  • The annuity trust pays you, each year, the same dollar amount you choose at the start. Your payments stay the same, regardless of fluctuations in trust investments.
  • The unitrust pays you, each year, a variable amount based on a fixed percentage of the fair market value of the trust assets. The amount of your payments is redetermined annually. If the value of the trust increases, so do your payments. If the value decreases, however, so will your payments.

Here’s how it works

Marilyn, 60, wants to make a gift to Bishop Chatard but would also like more income in the future. Marilyn creates a charitable remainder unitrust with annual lifetime payments to her equal to 6 percent of the fair market value of the trust assets as revalued annually. She funds the trust with assets valued at $250,000.

Marilyn receives $15,000 the first year from the trust. Subsequent payment amounts vary each year depending on the annual valuations of the trust assets. She is eligible for a federal income tax charitable deduction of $81,305* in the year she creates and funds the trust. This deduction saves Marilyn $22,765 in her 28 percent tax bracket.

*Based on annual payments and a 2.4 percent charitable midterm federal rate. Deductions vary based on income earned.

You can benefit from the tax savings that result from supporting Bishop Chatard High School without giving up the assets that you’d like your family to receive someday with a donation in the form of a charitable lead trust.

There are two ways that charitable lead trusts make payments to Bishop Chatard:

  •  A charitable lead annuity trust pays a fixed amount each year to Bishop Chatard and is more attractive when interest rates are low.
  •  A charitable lead unitrust pays a variable amount each year based on the value of the assets in the trust. With a unitrust, if the trust’s assets go up in value, for example, the payments to Bishop Chatard go up as well.

An Example of How It Works

George would like to support Bishop Chatard and provide for his children. Following his advisor’s recommendation, George funds a charitable lead annuity trust with assets valued at $2,500,000.

George’s trust pays $175,000 (7 percent of the initial fair market value) to Bishop Chatard each year for 15 years, which will total $2,625,000. After that, the balance in the trust goes to his children. Assuming a 6 percent investment return, the children will receive approximately $1,918,101.

His gift tax deduction is $2,182,775* against the $2,500,000 of assets. Therefore, only the difference ($317,225) is subject to gift tax, which is offset against his lifetime gift tax exclusion. After that, the remaining trust assets and all of their growth will pass to his family at zero additional cost in gift and estate taxes. Had George given the $2,500,000 outright to his children, it would have been a taxable gift.

*Assuming annual payments and 2.4 percent charitable midterm federal rate.

Appreciated Securities

Most popular ways to give this asset:

Securities and mutual funds that have increased in value and been held for more than one year are one of the most popular assets to use when making a gift. Making a gift of securities or mutual funds to Bishop Chatard offers you the chance to support our work while realizing important benefits for yourself.

When you donate appreciated securities or mutual funds you have held more than one year to us in support of our mission, you can reduce or even eliminate federal capital gains taxes on the transfer. You are also entitled to a federal income tax charitable deduction based on the fair market value of the securities at the time of the transfer.

Securities are most often used to support our work in the form of:
An outright gift. When you donate securities to Bishop Chatard, you receive the same income tax savings that you would if you wrote us a check, but with the added benefit of eliminating capital gains taxes on the transfer, which can be as high as 20 percent.
A transfer on death (TOD) account.* By placing a TOD designation on your brokerage or investment account, that account will be paid over to one or more persons or charities after your lifetime.

*State laws govern payable on death accounts. Please consult with your bank representative or investment advisor if you are considering this gift.

Retirement Plan Assets

Most popular ways to give this asset:

Not everyone wants to commit to making a gift in a will or estate. Some prefer the increased flexibility that a beneficiary designation provides by using:

  • IRAs and retirement plans
  • Life insurance policies
  • Commercial annuities

It only takes three, simple steps to make this type of gift. Here’s how to name Bishop Chatard High School as a beneficiary:

  1. Contact your retirement plan administrator, insurance company, bank or financial institution for a change-of-beneficiary form.
  2. Decide what percentage (1 to 100) you would like Bishop Chatard to receive and name Bishop Chatard High School, along with the percentage you chose, on the beneficiary form.
  3. Return the completed form to your plan administrator, insurance company, bank or financial institution.

An Example of How it Works:

Steve and Carol treasure the financial help they’ve been able to give their children and Bishop Chatard over the years. The couple recently updated their will to leave stocks and real estate to their kids. They left Bishop Chatard a $75,000 IRA to be transferred following their lifetime. Because Bishop Chatard is tax-exempt, all $75,000 will help support our mission.

If Steve and Carol had left the IRA to their children, approximately $21,000* would have gone to pay federal income taxes, leaving only $54,000 for their family’s use. Steve and Carol are happy knowing they are making the most of their hard-earned money thanks to their updated estate plan.

*Based on an assumption of a 28 percent marginal income tax bracket.

Your individual retirement account (IRA) is an excellent tool for saving for your retirement years. Even better, it’s an extremely easy way to support the causes that matter most to you. And once you are retired, your IRA is an easy, worry-free way to support Bishop Chatard High School that doesn’t affect your future financial security.

Option 1—if you are between 59½ and 70½: Once you hit 59½, you may begin taking money out of your IRA without paying a penalty. You’ll pay income tax on the amount you decide to withdraw, even if you use this money to make a gift to Bishop Chatard High School. But if you itemize your tax deductions, you are eligible to take an income tax charitable deduction for the full value of the gift, reducing your overall tax bill.

Option 2—if you are 70½ or older: This is the age where you must begin taking the required minimum distribution from your IRA. If you don’t need this income for your day-to-day expenses and would like the satisfaction of seeing your gift make a difference to those we serve today, you can make a contribution of up to $100,000 to Bishop Chatard High School directly from your IRA. It’s an easy way to make a great impact.

Option 3—if you are any age: You can support us with your IRA regardless of your age or financial needs during retirement by naming Bishop Chatard High School as a beneficiary of the account. This costs you nothing today, and you retain complete control over your account during your lifetime. As a nonprofit organization, we do not have to pay income or estate taxes on the gift and can put 100 percent of your gift toward our mission.

To learn more about using your IRA to change lives at Bishop Chatard, contact Margaret Ruffing at 317-251-1451, ext. 2242, or mruffing@bishopchatard.org.

Life Insurance

Most popular ways to give this asset:

When the original purpose for a life insurance policy no longer applies—such as educating children now grown or providing financial security for a spouse—your policy can become a powerful and simple way to support our work. There are three ways to give life insurance to Bishop Chatard High School.

Name Bishop Chatard as a beneficiary of the policy. This gift is as simple as updating your beneficiary designation form with the policy holder. You can designate us as the primary beneficiary for a percentage or specific amount. You can also make us the contingent beneficiary so that we will receive the balance of your policy only if your primary beneficiary doesn’t survive you.   (note – link to the ‘beneficiary designations’ page)

Make an outright gift of an existing policy. You can name us as owner and beneficiary of an existing policy. You may receive a federal income tax charitable deduction and reduce your future estate tax liability. If you continue to pay premiums on the policy, each payment is tax deductible as a charitable gift.

Make an outright gift of a new policy. You can take out a new policy and irrevocably name Bishop Chatard as the owner and the beneficiary of the insurance contract. This method may be particularly attractive for the younger donor. Whether you make one single premium payment for the policy or pay annual premiums, each payment is tax deductible as a charitable gift.

Real Estate

Most popular ways to give this asset:

Want to make a big gift to Bishop Chatard without touching your bank account? Consider giving us real estate. Such a generous gift helps us continue our work for years to come. And a gift of real estate also helps you. When you give us appreciated property you have held longer than one year, you get a federal income tax charitable deduction. This eliminates capital gains tax. And you no longer have to deal with that property’s maintenance costs, property taxes or insurance.

Another benefit: You don’t have to hassle with selling the real estate. You can deed the property directly to Bishop Chatard or ask your attorney to add a few sentences in your will or trust agreement.

You may give real estate to Bishop Chatard in the following ways:

Outright gift
Will or living trust
Retained life estate
Charitable gift annuity
Charitable remainder trust
Charitable lead trust
Memorial or endowed gift

You want to leave money to Bishop Chatard High School in your will. You also want the flexibility to change your will in the event that life circumstances change. You can do both.
In as little as one sentence, you can complete your gift. This type of donation to Bishop Chatard in your will or living trust helps ensure that we continue our mission for years to come.
