2009 Rugby Season Notes

State Championship

Congratulations to the Cathedral/Chatard Rugby team on their victory over Penn, 27-25, to win the rubgy state championship.Coming from a 3-20 deficit the defending state champions, the Royal Irish, came through with a win over Penn. They routed LaSalette 36-0 in advancing to the title meet. The Div II team also won State, with a 17-10 win over Hamilton Southeastern. In the semi-state, it came down to the very end of the game with the royal Irish coming out victorious 17 to 14. Congratulations to the following Chatard players nominated to the All-State teams: Div I 2nd Team: Jack McLaughlin, Div II 1st team: Greg Wood, Div II 2nd Team: Joe Sullivan.

Varsity Vs Penn: April 18

Everyone knew what was at stake, both teams were undefeated in league play. Both the Challenge Cup and the Midwest #1 seed were up for grabs. The match was a stalemate until Penn scored and was up 7-0. McLaughlin passed the ball out to Dominic Corsaro who scored the try to tie the match at 7. Corsaro blocked a kick and chased down the ball for a try and the Irish were up 12-7. Penn came down and tied the game up 12-12. With little time left in the game, Penn made a penilty kick and went up 15-12. The Irish sprinted to the Kick-off and put Penn under pressure but time ran out and Penn won 15-12. JV Vs Penn: April 18

Hoffmister started off the game with a try and Ney hit the conversion to put the Irish up 7-0. Hilger ran around the defense to put the Irish up 14-0 after the conversion by Joe Sullivan. Next up was Sergi who put up a try and the Irish were up 21-0 after the conversion by Joe Sullivan. Purcell sliced through the defense to put the Irish up 28-0 after the conversion by Joe Sullivan. Hilger closed the game with a try. Irish win 31-0. The JV team remains undefeated.

C-Side Vs Penn C-Side: April 18

The Irish played excellent with scores from Schmitt, Snemis, Douglas, Smith, Snemis, and Schroder (set up by Levi Kinney) and Ney hitting just about every conversion. The Irish won 43-5.

Varsity Vs Marion: April 18

Not wanting to break their undefeated season, the Irish came out with a pair of tries by Falvey and Peter Witcheger and with a conversion by Mundell were up 12-0. Marion showed that they were tough and hit a peanilty kick to bring it to 12-3. Mundell though that was a little too close for comfort and decided to score a try to put the Irish up 17-3. After the half, Peter Witchger eluded the Marion defenders to put the Irish up 24-3. Marion did something to wind up with 13 points. Dominic Cosaro thought that was close enough, caught with deft skill off of a bounce to finish the game 29-13.

JV Vs Marion: April 18

Marion did not have a full team so in the true spirit of the game, we lent some of our players to their team. Snemis started the game by punching through the Marion team to put the Irish up following the conversion by Woods. Next up was Broady who cut through the defense to put the Irish up 12-0. Sergi ran down the field and Joe Sullivan made the conversion to put the Irish up 19-0. Joe Hilger punched through the defense and Sullivan nailed the conversion to put the Irish up 26-0. Purcell took off and scored his first try of the day and after the conversion by Sullivan put the Irish up 38-0 at the half. The second half, Joey Cosaro ran down the sideline like a tight rope, stayed in bounds to score. Irish win 43-0.

C-Side Noblesville/HSE

This reporter was not at the match but did get reports that all of the players did a great job and enjoyed playing.

Irish Varsity vs Brownsburg: April 11

The Division I match was a hotly contested match the winner would remain undefeated in League play and would be the number 1 in the central region and would most likely determine which division we would go to for the Midwest. Both teams were ready for battle. Dominic Corsaro flew down the sideline to put the Irish up 7-0 following a conversion by Mundell. The Bulldogs would not go down easily and scored a try and conversion to tie the match up at 7 a piece. In the second half, the Irish were pressuring Brownsburg who had a scrum at the 5 meter line and their backs against the try zone. Brownsburg won the scrum and got the ball to their fly half who attempted to kick the ball but Falvey blocked the ball and Farrell touched it down for a try to put the Irish up 12-7. With two minutes left to play, Brownsburg had a scrum 10 meters out but our players took the scrum cyled the ball out a few phases and had a scrum to the Irish. The Irish took the scrum kicked the ball out of bounds and won the game.

Irish JV vs Brownsburg: April 11

The Irish were well prepared for the Bulldogs as Stokes started the match with a try to put the Irish up 7-0 with a conversion by Woods. Calvin Sullivan in a blitz of running ran through the defense to put the Irish up 14-0 following another conversion by Woods. Kochell sliced through the wall of Brownsburg players to put the Irish up 21-0 following yet another conversion by Woods. Calvin again smashed through the defense to put the score at 26-0, no conversion by Woods. Woods does one better and scores a try to put the Irish up 31-0. Brad streaked through the Bulldogs defense to put the Irish up 36-0. Calvin scored his hat trick to finish the game at 41-0.

"C" Side: vs Bishop Dwenger

Played in the Spirit of Rugby* Bishop Dwenger in the true spirit of Rugby agreed to play several of our players who have not seen much action. The players played two five minute half and in this quick match the Irish players got their feet wet and went up 10-0 after a pair of scores from Hall and Adkins.

JV: vs Bishop Dwenger W 39-0

The JV team got off to a great start as Brady crashed through the defenders to put the Irish up 5-0. Young Schroeder weaved his way in for a try to put the Irish up 10-0. Just before the half, Wes Stokes carried three defenders in for a try to put the Irish up 15-0. Okenna started off the second half with a try and Joe Sullivan made the conversion to put the Irish up 22-0. Peter Witchger paused the defense and ran around the defenders to put the Irish up 27-0. Young Schroeder carried the ball in for another try to put the Irish up 32-0. Peter Witchger decided that Schroeder would not be the only one to score twice in the game and put the Irish up 39 after the conversion by Joe Sullivan.

JV Championship: vs South Side Rebels (Roncalli) W 44-0

The JV team was matched up against the Varsity Rebel team after Roncalli beat NDLS in an overtime match. The Irish came out as Wes Stokes ran in for the first try of the match putting the Irish up 5-0. Brady who had been running hard all day took the ball for a run and put the Irish up 10-0. Hilger took the ball and ran around two defenders and flat outran the Rebel defenders to put the Irish up 15-0. Big Ralph figured that he would have a go at scoring as he weaved his way into a try to put the Irish up 20-0. Greg Wood made the conversion to put the Irish up 22-0. After the half, Sergi took a pass and brought the score up to 27-0. Hilger, being polite and sharing with others, put away two more trys to put the Irish up 37-0. Ney finally got the ball and after a Wood conversion put the Irish up 44-0 to win the JV Championship and remain undefeated.

Varsity: vs Marion W 36-3

The Irish took the field against a much larger Marion team. The team was off to a great start as Babbit cleanly took the ball and the forwards drove fro 20 meters until Jurkash rolled the ball into the defenders and Jack rucked the ball out to pass it to Dominic Corsaro who scored the try and Jimmy Mundell made the conversion to put the Irish up 7-0. Jimmy Mundell then drew two defenders to him and passed the ball out to Dominic who sprinted down the field for 15 meters and popped the ball up to Falvey who set up the ruck and Jack got the ball out to Jurkash who went in for the try putting the Irish up 12-0. Bennet got the ball and ran around and through 7 players with Dominic in support the whole way but Bennet did not need it as he put the Irish up 19-0 after the Mundell conversion. At the beginning of the second half, Marion was penalized and Jack gave Falvey the ball who crashed through and drug 4 Marion players to put the Irish up 24-0. Marion made a penalty kick for three points. In an amazing performance of seeing the hole, Jack takes the ball off of a line out and splits two big Marion men and ran 10 meters and kicked the ball to put Marion under pressure who kicked the ball out of bounds. Marion had another pealnity and the Irish set up a briliant play to get the backs the ball. The ball was cycled through the hands to Hilger who walked in for the try to put the Irish up 29-3. Falvey took the on a run while tackled passed the ball to Jack who made the score putting the Irish up 36-3 after Mundell made the conversion. The Irish Varsity headed to the Championship for the third straight year.

Varsity Championship: vs. NDLS W 43-5

In a classic rematch of of the previous two years championship matches, the NDLS who defeated Bishop Dwenger 12-5, was ready to take the Catholic Cup back home once again. However, the Irish had a much different idea. In a brilliant move of years of experience that trancends schools a pair of former Tigers (CTK) put together an unstopable play. Jack chip-kicked the ball into the air as Dominic hunted the ball down. The ball bounced twice and Dominic caught the ball on the bounce and was unstopable as he scored the try to put the Irish up 5-0. Falvey then gets the ball and runs into three players and forms a ruck, the ball is recycled through several players and the ball gets out to Schroeder takes a long run who pops the ball to McLaughlin who tosses it to Jurkash to put the Irish up 12-0 after the Mundell conversion. After a scrum from the five meter line, McLaughlin takes the ball and draws the weak side wing in then passes the ball to Falvey who crashes in to put the Irish up 19-0 following the kick from Mundell. Dominic Corasaro ran around and through to put the Irish up 24-0. NDLS received a penality and the Irish had the ball at the five meter line. The pack formed the wall penality and got the ball out to Falvey who crunched through three NDLS players to put the Irish up 29-0. Mundell split the uprights to put the Irish up 31-0. Bennett made a great run around several defenders and passed the ball to Page who scored to put the Irish up 36-0. With the Championship well in hand the Irish made several subsitutions and NDLS scored to make it 31-5. Bennett flat out ran the opposition and this time decided to score himself to end the game 43-5 after the Mundell conversion.
