After five successful seasons at Tipton High School, Travis Daugherty has been hired as the boys basketball coach at Bishop Chatard.

Daugherty, 30, led Class 2A Tipton to a 75-40 record, including 44 wins the past two years led by Indiana University recruit Derek Elston.

"It's difficult walking away from a situation that I enjoyed so much," said Daugherty, an Alexandria native. "The future is bright for Tipton basketball. At the same time, the opportunity exists for Bishop Chatard to be a special place for basketball."

Chatard athletic director Mike Ford said Daugherty was picked over eight other finalists and 42 total applicants.

"It was a tough decision because we had more quality applicants than we could have asked for," Ford said. "Travis is a young coach with a charismatic personality that we think kids will be drawn to. And he's had success building a program."

Chatard won the Class 3A state championship in 2002-03 under coach Dan Archer. Chris Quinn, who resigned last month, compiled a 66-39 record in five seasons. The Trojans were 9-11 last season.

Ford said Chatard has a "nice returning cast," including three starters. The Trojans also won the city tournament at the junior varsity and freshman levels.

"The more I talked to the people at Chatard, the more I felt like it was the right situation," said Daugherty, who also was an assistant at Alexandria for two years. "It really seems ideal."
