Area athletes go for the gold today

Thirty-one individuals and 10 relay teams from the area will compete in the girls track state meet beginning at 3 p.m. today at Indiana University. Here is a look at athletes with a chance to bring home a title:

Anyone named Farley, Park Tudor

Event 100 meters, 200, 400, 800, 1,600 relay.

What to watch Hannah Farley is trying to become the first athlete since North Central's Maicel Malone (1984-87) to win four straight 400-meter titles, and could add 100 (seeded fifth) and 200 (first) titles. Abbey Farley, Hannah's sister, is the top seed in the 800. They also will form half of the second-seeded 1,600 relay team.

"It will be a mental challenge (for Hannah), but I think she's ready for the physical workload," said coach Ryan Ritz.

"Abbey is going to have to run her race. Last year the field went out quick and she was in second- or third-to-last after the first lap but (finished fifth). She can't get caught up in the emotions."

Toughest competition Hannah Farley will have to cut nearly half a second off her 100 time of 12.46 to catch No. 1 seed Ebony Wright of Warren Central (12.05) and Indian Creek's Katie Wise (12.08). Farley, however, will have a similar edge in the 200 (25.07, ahead of Evansville Central's Nikita Owens' 25.43 and Pike's Erica Campbell's 25.45) and 400 (55.24 to Warren Central's Logan Hayes' 56.15).

The 800 will be a contrast in styles between Abbey Farley (2:14.89) and Southmont's Creasy Clauser (2:15.02), who likes to start fast. North Central's Verena Vogel (2:15.29) also is a threat.

Lawrence North is favored in the 1,600 relay with more than a three-second edge on the Panthers.

Lawrence North 1,600 relay

What to watch Antonia Franklin has stepped in for Courtney Hill, but the other three members -- Stacia Weatherford, Ashley Spencer and Ahlivia Spencer -- return from last year's champions. The quartet is seeded No. 1 coming off a regional record time of 3:52.39.

"The team has basically worked together for two years, and they are definitely clicking," said coach Hillary Church, noting Franklin was an alternate last year and had experience with the unit. "(The experience) is huge because they're very, very close friends. You can tell when the baton is in their hands they run harder for their friends."

Toughest competition The Wildcats have more than a two-second edge on second-seeded Park Tudor (3:54.96).

Bishop Chatard 3,200 relay

What to watch Unlike Lawrence North, this team didn't work together until sectionals when freshman Maggie Bell joined senior Emily Boyce, freshman Mary Davis and junior Christine Kirby. Coach Sean McGinley knew he had the makings of a powerful 3,200 relay team, but it took the entire season for the pieces to fall into place.

"We're surprised we're seeded No. 1 (and) surprised at the time we ran," McGinley said. "If everything goes well we can run faster, but we feel like there's a handful of teams that can run faster or just as fast as us. It's just how it will shape up (today)."

Toughest competition It's hard to imagine two teams being much closer as Bishop Chatard is the No. 1 seed at 9:29.07, 16-hundredths of a second faster than Lake Central. (That's about half the time it takes to blink.) No. 3 seed Carmel is three seconds back and the rest of the competition at least five. North Central posted an unofficial time better than the Trojans' in sectionals, though a timing malfunction kept it from being recorded, McGinley said.
