Trojans go back to the basics
Coach says hitters are taking too many good pitches, which leads to anemic .162 team batting average in first 3 games

Bishop Chatard High School baseball coach Mike Harmon hopes losing a few games to the weather this week will keep his team from losing a few more on the field later on.

The Trojans opened the season 1-2 -- losses to Class 4A No. 4 Cathedral and Cardinal Ritter and a victory over 2A No. 8 Scecina -- and hit just .162. Harmon scheduled four games for this week, but a washout Monday gave the team a chance to get back to fundamentals at practice indoors.

"I don't like getting rained out, but we were talking about having four straight games, then school policy is not to practice on Good Friday, so it was going to be Saturday before we could work on the things we need to improve," Harmon said.

"Next week we have (reigning 4A state champion) Decatur Central, Franklin Central and a weekend trip to Jeffersonville and (3A No. 6) Jasper. We'll go back to basics. We need to get things turned around."

Bishop Chatard's game Monday at Roncalli was rained out, but the Trojans hosted Southport on Tuesday, were to play Wednesday at Warren Central and host Muncie Central at 5 p.m. today.

Senior Jon Brumleve had a big double against Scecina, and Steve Maniago went 3-for-8 in the first three games. Sophomore Chris Jansen picked up the victory over Scecina with four strong innings of relief.

"We're taking too many good pitches and not playing with much confidence," Harmon said. "That's not a good recipe for success. We've got the pieces (to be successful), but we don't have a lot of room for error. We can turn it around, but we've got to start doing basic fundamentals."
