Girls Freshmen Basketball Notes
The Bishop Chatard Freshman Lady Trojan basketball squad played as the visiting team in our own house on Sat, Jan 31, when they faced the Cathedral Lady Irish in a first round game of the Bishop Chatard City Invitational Tournament. Although BCHS had prepared well , the pace and tempo of the game favored Cathedral from the opening tip throughout the entire contest, ending in a 31 - 16 defeat for the Lady Trojans. Cathedral led 9 - 6 after one quarter and outscored Bishop Chatard in each of the subsequent quarters. Cathedral out rebounded the Trojans 22 to 17 and, and had a 42% field goal shooting The Lady Trojans had 3 players break into the scoring column (Caroline Springer with 10 points, sister Julianne with 4 points and Arden Burch with 2 points) as BCHS shot a season low 17% from the field. Despite 16 free throw attempts (to the Irish's 7), we were able to hit only 5 free throws for an equally disappointing 31% free throw percentage. Annie Dietrick grabbed 5 rebounds with each Springer grabbing 3 rebounds apiece to lead our board attack. While this loss was very disappointing, the positive attitude, intensity, and hustle from the entire team was very encouraging. The Bishop Chatard Lady Trojan freshman basketball squad hosted the Lady Greyhounds from Division 4 powerhouse Carmel High School on 12/15/08. Once again BCHS showed tremendous defensive intensity throughout the game en route to a 38 - 31 victory. Annie Dietrick opened the game's scoring with a soaring 3-point basket that helped to vault Bishop Chatard to a 10 - 5 first quarter lead. An evenly-played second quarter, highlighted by good defensive pressure from both teams, resulted in a 4-point, 18 - 14, halftime lead for the Lady Trojans. The lead was stretched to 9 by the end of the third stanza. BCHS withstood a furious Carmel charge early in the fourth quarter that reduced the lead to 4 points but, after a timeout calmed our squad's nerves a bit, we went into our 4-corner North Carolina offense to control the ball and exerted even more defensive pressure on the Lady Greyhounds to lead to the final margin of victory. Both teams shot about 33% from the field and the "battle of the boards" was even with each team recording 27 rebounds. The statistical differences were shown primarily in turnovers where the lady Trojans forced 22 Carmel errors while turning the ball over only 13 times themselves. Particularly noticeable was the improvement in ball-handling by Bishop Chatard in the second half with only 4 errors recorded in the final two quarters. Bishop Chatard was led in scoring by Julianne Springer's 10 points while Annie Dietrick and Arden Burch chipped in with 9 and 6 points apiece. The Lady Trojans were led in rebounding by Caroline Springer's 6 boards with Dietrick and Burch chipping in another 5 rebounds each. The victory brought the season record up to a 4 - 6 mark. The Franklin Central High School Lady Flashes freshman girls basketball squad visited Bishop Chatard on Monday evening. BCHS proceeded to show its speed, quickness and mental toughness as it won the opening tip, scored, and proceeded to increase its margin throughout the game, prevailing by a final score of 48 - 41. Bishop Chatard generated its most points in a game for the season with Caroline Springer (15 points), Julianne Springer (13 points) and Annie Dietrick (10 points). BCHS dominated in rebounding with 32 boards while holding its opponent to 16 rebounds. Caroline Springer led with 8 rebounds, Katelyn Barron and Annie Dietrick each tallied 6 boards while Annie Bates chipped in with another 5 rebounds. The Lady Trojans will take a modest 2-game winning streak into its Wednesday evening home game against Ben Davis High School. The game starts with a 6:00 PM. |
